March Fly Fishing Action

I love fishing small streams and frankly I love fishing small streams that have good populations of fish. On this day, March 5th, it was as nice as it can get here in southern Indiana. Early March fly fishing action usually means some pretty nasty weather…70 degrees and sunny is simply a delight!
White River in MarchThe more I look and search for these small, holy waters…the more I find that they exists in greater numbers than I ever thought just a few years back. The video (below) is taken from a small stream that is driven over on a regular basis by many in the community. I am betting that you have a stream or two just like it and with some research…there could be a few good fish brought to hand.

NOTE: PLEASE EXCUSE MY POOR CAMERA ANGLE ON THE CLOSE UP VIEWS! This is one of those rare times when I didn’t have my head mounted GoPro angled downward enough to completely pick up the fish and my fly…my apologies.

On this day it was a great finish to an awesome Sunday…in fact we had discussed at length how great God is and the fact that for me…nature is all the proof I ever need. The air smelled like spring. The water was gurgling its way towards the White River. The birds, which were numerous, were out in full force! Yes, indeed God was there on this small stream with me.
Jeff fly fishing White RiverThe fishing was good as rock bass after rock bass was fooled by my simple black weighted leech pattern that was tied with weight and a hook that allowed the fly to bottom bounce and not get stuck. In fact, most times as a fly-guy you are competing with the rock bass as these smaller, aggressive fish will steal the fly before a smallie gets the opportunity.

On the day I was able to catch 15 or so rock bass and one nice 15 inch, chunky smallmouth…not too bad for an early March day. I hope you enjoy the video and I hope you can find a similar small stream in your area that will allow you to get out frequently this year.
